Dr. Angel Licea-Claveríe, is a full-time professor at the Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana, which is part of the Tecnológico Nacional de México (Mexico’s National Tech Institute). He did PhD studies on Polymer Chemistry at the Leuna-Merseburg Technological University in Germany (1990). He was on leave for sabbatical stays at the IBM Almaden Research Center in California, USA (2001), at the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of UNAM, Mexico (2011) and at the Biomedical Innovation Department of CICESE, Ensenada, Mexico (2019). He has 24 years of experience in the study of temperature and pH sensitive polymers and 20 years of experience on controlled radical polymerization techniques that allowed him to synthesize well defined statistical copolymers, block copolymers, star polymers and polymer networks (hydrogels), controlling the presence of functional groups. He´s research group have studied the controlled release of anti-inflammatory and anticancer drugs from the sensitive polymeric materials developed.
Currently he works on the following topics:
- Development of nanocarriers: nanogels, star-polymers, polymeric micelles for loading and release of drugs.
- Development of hydrogel-based nanocomposite biomaterials.
- Development of environment sensitive polymers for flocculation and removal of emergent contaminants from waste water.
He has coauthored more than 120 publications and has more than 2000 citations to his work and has an h index of 24. He has mentored 22 PhD-students, 32 Master students and many undergraduate students. He is member of the Mexican Polymer Society since 1998 and was its National President (2016-2017), he is also Member of the Mexican Chemical Society since 1994, and Member of the American Chemical Society, Division of Polymer Chemistry, since 2006.
He is founder and Chief of the Polymer Laboratory at the Center for Graduate Studies and Research in Chemistry, Instituto Tecnológico de Tijuana.
